Park Sunghoon entered the dark room, stumped.

His friend Kim Sunoo had brought him to a concert.

One problem though: Sunghoon had zero knowledge when it came to all things musical. The only tunes he had ever listened to were the classical jazz his father introduced him to when he was younger. Hell, Sunghoon barely even uses his own Spotify account! He only created it so that Sunoo could get the cheap Family Plan deal.

(“The student plan still exists, Sunoo.”

“You’ll thank me for this later.”

“Will I?”)

Truth be told, Sunghoon was supposed to be knee-deep in formulating a perfect lengthy essay for his university coursework. Sunoo, being the trickster he was, had “accidentally mistaken” a trip to the library to get research materials as a trip to an arts centre where a band was playing.

“You dirty little liar!” Sunghoon squeaked the moment the two of them took their seats. “How dare you manipulate me into going outdoors! Again!”

Sunoo rolls his eyes. “I needed to get you out of the dorm one way or another. You’re always cooped up in there! Is getting a degree really worth it?”

“An education is definitely more important than… whatever this is,” Sunghoon grumbled.

“Come on! These guys are like, good. I’m friends with the drummer so I’ve seen them play before!” Sunoo reassured. If Sunoo was trying to convince Sunghoon to remove the pout on his face, he was doing an awful job at it.

Sunghoon sighed. Well, he might as well just enjoy whatever was in store for him. The mellow rock playing in the background seemed not so bad. Maybe, this band was decent and Sunoo had friends with impeccable taste?

The mellow rock faded into the background and the lights began to dim. The crowd began to go wild, clapping and screaming for the band’s entrance.

A spotlight switched on, shining onto the drum kit with a young man behind it. He threw his sticks into the air and caught them just in time. With a mean glint in his eyes, he then raised them to the sky, rapped them against each other and yelled: “One, two, three, four!”

A surge of electricity sparked through Sunghoon.

Everything was playing at once. The drummer of course led the energy throughout, beating the drums as if he needed the music to be louder. The two guitarists strummed and plucked the strings as if their fingers didn’t know what blisters even were. Their keyboardist had the vocals of a possessed Angel. Was that even possible? Sunghoon had zero idea.

Mostly because he might or might not have been completely enamoured by the man who looked like he was going to murder that bass guitar of his.

Sunoo may have picked their spots from somewhere in the middle of the crowd but somehow even from a distance, Sunghoon could see how much of a gorgeous figure the bassist was.

Sunghoon had seen quite a number of fairly attractive people in his life. Though he never really saw the need to act upon them. Yet, something about that man lured him even more.

He needed to know his name.

“Man, Jake is really rocking it as a bassist!” Sunoo exclaimed out of the blue.

Oh. Well that was easy.

The band played a couple of songs after the first. As Sunghoon slowly developed a love for rock music, so did his attraction towards the bassist on the stage. Knowing his name coincidentally just wasn’t enough. He needed to actually know who Jake was.

Again, Sunoo helped with that quickly.

The lead guitarist of the band, Heeseung hosted an afterparty once their little gig was over. The drummer who went by Jay, obviously invited Sunoo who pulled Sunghoon along.

When the two of them arrived at the boarding house, they were instantly met with a string of people already sprawled on the front yard. Typical red plastic cups of beer were thrown across the lawn. The party goers barely even looked like they were conscious, considering how they fumbled to the music. Sunghoon was starting to regret his decision to follow Sunoo.

Nonetheless, Sunoo pulled him by the hand through the front door. Inside, the party was already in full swing despite the band having ended their show about half an hour ago.

“Hyung! Over here!”

A male suddenly stepped into their way as Sunoo still pulled Sunghoon through a hallway. He was wearing a black blazer with a white undershirt as well as black denim jeans. Sunghoon quickly recognised him as the rhythm guitarist of the band. What was his name though… Riki?

“Niki!” Sunoo chirped.

Sunghoon watched as his friend did a sort of special handshake with the stranger. It involved too many steps for Sunghoon to even count.

“You guys did so well earlier!” Sunoo praised.

Niki instantly beamed at the compliment. “Thank you! I try my best to wow a crowd.”

After a bit of small talk, Niki quickly led the two to the other members of the band. They were sitting on a couch in the middle of the living room. Heeseung and Jay were linking arms and downing shots. Behind them, Sunghoon found the keyboardist laughing at them.

“Why is it that every time you host a party, you have to link arms and down shots?” Sunoo asked when they approached the group. Sunghoon had the exact same question.

“I don’t know!” their keyboardist shrieked. “But it’s fucking hilarious.”

“You know I always expected you to at least have a better sense of humour, Jungwon,” Niki noted.

Jungwon rolled his eyes. “If you have a problem with what I find comedic then you might as well cancel our plans for Friday night.”

Niki shot Jungwon finger guns and a grin.

Sunghoon began to feel out of place. It wasn’t exactly an unfamiliar feeling. He has had plenty of similar experiences of following Sunoo to parties expecting for a little bit of socialisation. Only, he never does. What he does instead is find a drink and a couch to sit on and mull over his life.

So Sunghoon did exactly that. He rounded around Sunoo and dove into the couch. It was pretty comfortable unlike the ones at other boarding houses. Heeseung must have lived in one of the more expensive ones.

“You’re new.”

Sunghoon turned to his right at the unfamiliar voice. The face who belonged to it however, was not what he was expecting. Sunghoon was sure that he had taken special note of the bassist’s features to memory. Like how his eyebrows had a slit or how his eyes had a mean glint as the concert progressed.

Sunghoon had forgotten one thing: how different beauty could look at different distances.

“It’s you.”

Jake blinked.

“Um, yes?” He raised an eyebrow at Sunghoon. “And you are?”

“Sunghoon. We’ve never met. I’m Sunoo’s friend.”

“Oh, so you’re the one Sunoo keeps talking about!” Jake studied Sunghoon for a bit. “Yeah, I can see why Jay is so jealous of you right now.”

Sunghoon blinked. “Jay likes Sunoo?”

“Hell yeah he does! Dude’s just too much of a coward to confess though. Honestly, I thought Sunoo would at least catch on and make a move.” Jake shook his head. “Turns out he’s just as oblivious.”

“Well that’s interesting. Sunoo definitely has a crush on Jay. How can they both not see that they like each other?”

Jake shrugged. “Beats me! But hey, they’re not as bad as those two over there.”

Sunghoon followed the direction of Jake’s finger to which it pointed at where Niki and Jungwon stood at the other end of the room. Niki was sharing a joke or what not with a clearly unimpressed Jungwon. But even from here, Sunghoon could see that Jungwon was completely whipped for the younger.

“They’ve been dodging all of their feelings since the start of high school,” Jake groaned. “One day, Heeseung completely gave up. He set up a date for them this Friday and told them to thank him for it later.”

Sunghoon laughed. To which, Jake supplied a wide grin.

“Sunghoon, was the name?”

Sunghoon nodded. “And you’re Jake.”

“Indeed I am.” Jake leaned back into the couch, propping his feet up onto the table in front of them. “You know I really hate parties. I don’t know why Heeseung keeps hosting them when he hates cleaning up afterwards.”

“Same. Sunoo keeps dragging me to them. He expects too much of me.”

Silence, it lapsed for a moment.

“Do you want to get out of here?”
