“And once you’re done with your shift, you get either me or Jaan to sign your check-in sheet. Got it?”
Sooha looks up, hesitant to answer her new co-worker.
But Tina isn't a very patient person apparently. She scowls, raises an eyebrow at her. “Well?”
Sooha nods instantly. “Yes. Got it. Understood.”
Tina hums. “You’re going to need to pay attention if you’re going to keep up with being a barista.”
Sooha doesn't say anything. Tina dismisses her right after, informing her that she can start working tomorrow. Sooha would have to get up at 10am, leave her dorm at 10.45am and run down to the cafe across the field to get ready for her 11.30AM shift.
Sounds pretty easy, right?
Sooha sighs. She doesn't actually need the money currently. Sure, it would be nice to spend some of it on vinyls but she’s deathly afraid that might somehow turn into a collection that she’ll obsess over. Plus, it’s not like she’s not busy. Being on the Nightball team for Girls was definitely a heavy commitment, considering how much the school dedicated itself to the sport.
The real reason why Sooha decided to land herself a part-time job at the academy’s cafe? Well, to be honest, it’s quite embarrassing to reveal. But she guesses she’ll have to expose herself before someone else does…
At around 3PM after the boys’ nightball team practice ends, they’d all rush in for the nice gust of cool air that hits them.
Solon would order an iced vanilla latte, Noa would order the same, Jaan would demand that his order be free (which Sooha would decline), Jakah hates coffee, Shion would order iced peach tea, Jino would get an iced americano and Heli would order the drink of the day.
Minutes after they settle down, Sooha would study them and wonder. What was it that made them so special?
While she does that, she’d take note of the door conveniently opening seconds after Heli finishes paying for his drink. Striding into the café is none other than Alex, Sooha’s roommate herself.
Sooha wishes her heart didn't have to pound so loud whenever she took sight of her roommate like this.
“Sooha!” Alex claims. She scurries over to the front counter, just so happening to lean in too close for Sooha to get a whiff of the perfume she chose that day. Strawberries. The perfume Sooha had gotten for Alex’s birthday last year.
“Alex,” Sooha somehow manages to find her voice and greets back.
“I didn't know you were going to work here. Is it because…” Alex’s eyes dart between the nightball team players and Sooha.
Ah. Right. You see the thing about Alex is that no matter how interesting she is to Sooha, she knows that her crush would never feel the same way about her. For what Alex is to Sooha, is kind of what the boys’ nightball team players are to Alex.
To put it simply, Alex was a huge fan of the boys. She would cheer at every game. She would go to every practice. She would learn all about their smart game tactics, their iconic moves, their official numbers, basically everything. She swears to Sooha that she doesn't mean to be much of a stalker, but she does admit that following the boys’ nightball schedule can be exhausting.
Which is why Alex also happens to cool down at the café right after all the practices and the games. Over time, it became her favorite place to hangout.
Sooha has been noticing that Alex hasn't been at the dorm as much as she used to anymore. Whenever she asks her where she is, it’ll always be at the café. That saddened her. She wanted to see Alex. She wanted to hang out with her crush too.
So that’s how her pathetic sapphic ass ended up applying for a barista job at said café. All this effort just so that she could watch from the corner of her eye as Alex’s brown curls cascade down as she takes notes for her next class. Or when she does her homework which Sooha knows she’ll complain about later on when she returns to the dorm.
It may not seem worth it to anyone else. But for Sooha, it does. And that is all that matters.
“Excuse me?”
Sooha switches her attention from Alex onto the boy in front of her. She wants to scowl, considering that the boy had interrupted something nice. But she supposes she has to be polite instead. It’s what her mother always tells her to be.
So she puts on a fake smile and asks, “Yes, how may I help?”
“You’re Sooha right?” The boy continues. Sooha looks at him for a second. Which one of the nightball team boys is this again? She checks his hair. Blue?
Oh.
“Yes, Solon. I am. We’ve been classmates for a semester and you still don't remember me?”
Solon frowns. “I don't remember a lot of my classmates, to be honest.”
Sooha stares at him. He can’t be serious.
Solon stares back. He is.
Sooha sighs. “Again, is there anything I can help you with?”
“You remember our history class?”
“What about it?”
“Well, the assignment states we have to get into pairs.”
Sooha gives him a look. So this is where the conversation is going.
“And, I wanted to do it with Shion but he was stolen from another one of my classmates,” Solon adds.
So Sooha was basically just his second choice then. Well, it’s not like she had him in mind either, to be fair.
“Alright.” She nods. “I’ll do the assignment with you.”
“Okay. Well, I’ll be in the courtyard after school tomorrow morning. We can meet and get started.”
They exchange numbers and then right after, Sooha watches as all of the Decelis Nightball Team boys leave the café one after another.
She checks the clock. Still two more hours to go until her shift ends it seems. What could she do to pass the time?
“Sooha!”
A voice rings out from behind her head. Sooha swerves around, only to again be face to face with none other than…
“Alex,” Sooha responds.
“What. The. Hell.”
Sooha only stares at her roommate.
“You were talking with Solon earlier and you didn't rush to tell me? What kind of friend are you!” Alex exclaims.
Sooha shrugs. “He was only going to ask if I could be his partner for one of our classes.”
“Oh.” Alex’s smile falls. Then, it returns. “But still!”
“But still what, exactly?”
Alex grins. “I don't know. I mean. Solon’s pretty cute, don’t you think?”
“Oh my God.”
“See! You agree, don’t you?”
Alex’s grin getting wider could not hurt Sooha any more than this. Because the thing is, Alex may be a lesbian, but she’s not blind. Neither is the case for Sooha.
“Okay, maybe I do agree a little bit,” Sooha mutters.
Alex giggles. “You know, I could help with getting you two together or something.”
“Absolutely not!” Sooha cries out, burying her head in her hands. “Besides, I already like s—” She pauses. She looks at Alex to see if she noticed, but Alex is still giggling. She sighs in relief.
“I bet you two would look so cute together,” Alex adds on.
Sooha resists the urge to roll her eyes. “Okay, that’s enough. I have customers to attend to. Shoo, shoo!”
Alex looks around. ““What customers? I’m literally the only one here.”
“Potential customers. From the future,” Sooha justifies. “Besides, I need to go and relearn how to make some drinks again. If you stay, you’ll only distract me from the learning process.”
Alex pouts. “Fineeeee.” She turns on her heel. “But I’m not leaving the café until you clock out.”
“Just as long as you don't disturb me, aight?” Sooha says.
Alex smiles. “Deal.”
